IM of CNY in the News
B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that has many functions in the body. It is needed for healthy red blood cell formation as well as for the production of DNA. It is also important for proper development and function of brain and nerve cells. Your body does not make vitamin B12, so it must be consumed by food or taken as a supplement. Milk, red meat, fish, poultry, and other dairy products all contain vitamin B12. Some foods are also fortified with vitamin B12 such as cereals, breads, some plant milks, and nutritional yeast.
Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur when not enough B12 is consumed in your diet or if you are not able to absorb it. Individuals with digestive disorders may be more prone to B12 deficiency as adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid is necessary to break down B12 from food and absorb it. Intrinsic factor is also required for the absorption of B12. Individuals with pernicious anemia lack this protein and therefore they become B12 deficient. These individuals will likely need to take B12 through injections so that it bypasses the digestive system. Vegans or vegetarians are also at risk of being deficient in B12 as they do not get as much of it in their diet. Some symptoms of B12 deficiency are fatigue, mouth sores, numbness or tingling in your hands and feet, vision problems, and feelings of depression. Vitamin B12 deficiency can be diagnosed by a blood test that may be ordered by your medical provider. If you are deficient in B12, oral supplementation can be given as well as subcutaneous or intramuscular injections. The form of B12 we use is Methylcobalamin as it is the active form of B12. Below are some benefits of Vitamin B12:
● Improved energy and stamina
● Improved sleep quality and duration
● Higher metabolism
