Plants that Repel Ticks and Mosquitos

July 06, 20232 min read

During the better weather months, it can be challenging to enjoy the outdoors without having concerns about bug bites. Mosquitos and ticks are not only a nuisance, but their bites can transmit diseases that make humans and animals very ill. Taking the usual precautions of wearing appropriate clothing and applying topical deterrents can help, but there is also another very natural way to fend off these pests. Dig in the dirt!!!! There are numerous plants that help repel both mosquitoes and ticks, and these are plants that can be purposeful in your home! Herbs, such as Lavender, Basil, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Garlic, Sage, Thyme, and Chives all have a scent that deters mosquitoes and ticks from biting. With all of the commercial brands of bug repellent on the market, it can be a challenge to find one that does not contain harmful chemicals. So, dig in the dirt and plant these herbs in your garden, in your flowerpots, and even in your home. Not only will they help deter the “unwanted visitors”, but they will also provide natural scents that can help provide other healthful benefits. Lavender is soothing and can help with sleep and relaxation. Peppermint can be used to help ease headaches, nausea, anxiety, and even congestion. Many of the other herbs can be used when preparing our meals. The essential oils made from these herbs can be used in many ways to enhance your health!

Natural Homemade Repellent

-1/3 c distilled water

-¼ c witch hazel

-30 drops of your preferred essential oil (peppermint, geranium, cedarwood, lemongrass, lavender)

Take a glass jar and add all the ingredients. (If using more than one essential oil, use a little of each so as to not exceed 30 drops total). Cover and shake the jar. Transfer the contents of the jar to a spray bottle. Then it is ready for use. The key is to reapply every two hours. As soon as the fragrance fades, it is time to reapply. Please be mindful of any personal sensitivities or allergies when making your spray and tailor it to your scent preference!
